First entry

It's a little less than a month until I begin my Americorps program. I wanted to get this up and running now, and I'll post this link on my facebook page (I'm basically mimicking Emily).

For those of you who don't know, I FINALLY got into Americorps, which is a government-run volunteer service program. I'll be building houses, running after-school programs, planting trees, cleaning up for disaster relief, and any number of other things. And possibly operating a chainsaw. :) My base is in Perry Point, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay just outside of Baltimore. We cover the entire Atlantic Coast, and about half of our service projects will be on the Gulf Coast, as they're still doing major Hurricane Katrina cleanup. During my ten months of service, I will not be on base very often. We'll be staying in people's homes, hostels, churches, camping, or whatever is available in near our project site. I'll still have my cell phone with me, and any mail you send to the base will be Fed-Exed out to our site once a week. All the contact information is on the blog home page. I'll also have some holidays off here and there, so let me know if you want to go to a Phillies/Nationals/Orioles game with me this summer!
